On 16 April 2023 the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of its Permanent Representatives, convened for an extraordinary session under the presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The convocation featured the attendance of Permanent Representatives, heads of delegations, and His Excellency Ambassador Hossam Zaki, the Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
The meeting was convened pursuant to a request made by the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in compliance with Article 5, paragraph (5/b) of the council's internal regulations, which stipulates that "the council shall convene... in an extraordinary session upon the request of two member states..."
The meeting was held to discuss the developments in the Republic of Sudan, culminating in the issuance of the following statement:
