Aboul Gheit meets Somalia Foreign Minister

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Federal Somalia, on 29 June during the latter’s stop in Cairo. The meeting focused on developments in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.

Aboul Gheit condemns Israeli decisions in the West Bank for being a "complete overturn of the Oslo Accords"

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit vehemently condemned the Israeli cabinet decisions to withdraw the powers of the Palestinian Authority in Area B, punish some Authority officials by restricting their movement, and launch Israeli settlement construction in various areas of the West Bank. He stated that these decisions represent a complete and final overturn of the Oslo Accords, reverting the situation to a pre-agreement state and reinforcing a blatant occupation.

General Secretariat convenes with Anti-Apartheid Department of Palestine Liberation Organisation and Arab Coalition against Apartheid and Settler Colonialism

​Ambassador Said Abu Ali, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, met with a delegation from the Anti-Apartheid Department of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and the Arab Coalition against Apartheid and Settler Colonialism on 26 June at the headquarters of the General Secretariat. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Legal Sector, Ms. Maha Bakhit, and the Social Affairs Sector, Mr. Khamis Bouzidi.

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is commemorated annually on 26 June. The United Nations has announced this year's theme: "The evidence is clear: Invest in prevention." 
The global drug problem represents a multifaceted challenge that affects the lives of millions worldwide. From individuals with substance use disorders to communities grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organised crime, the impact of drugs is far-reaching and complex. Central to addressing this challenge is the need to adopt a scientific, evidence-based approach that prioritises prevention and treatment.


General Secretariat holds workshop on “China-Arab States Cooperation Forum: 20 Years of Giving and Cooperation”

General Secretariat participates in training course for African cadres in irrigation field

​In cooperation with the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture, the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries is participating in a training course in Kigali, Rwanda, for the benefit of high-level African cadres in the field of irrigation. The initiative is a collaboration between the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, the African Union Office for Cereals and Arid Regions, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the African Export-Import Bank, and the World Bank. The League of Arab States and the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries participated in the opening ceremony of the training course, which took place on 24 June in Kigali.

Arab Radio and Television Festival organises 24th edition

​The Arab Broadcasting Union is organising the 24th edition of the Arab Radio and Television Festival in the City of Culture in Tunis from 25 to 29 June, in partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Radio and Television, and the Arab Satellite Communications Corporation "Arabsat”.

Aboul Gheit stresses necessity of coordinating international efforts to save Sudan at African Peace and Security Council summit

​Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated via Zoom in the opening of the African Peace and Security Council summit dedicated to discussing developments in Sudan. The summit was held on Friday, 21 June 2024 and chaired by President Museveni of Uganda, the current President of the African Peace and Security Council. Other participants included the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, and the representative of the UN Secretary-General.

Statement of Arab Regional Consultation Process on Migration and Asylum on World Refugee Day

​As the number of refugees and displaced persons increases on a daily basis, along with their suffering and the challenges they face, representatives of member states in the Arab Regional Consultation Process on Migration and Asylum stress the importance of security and support for refugees. On the occasion of World Refugee Day, they emphasise the principle of sharing burdens and responsibilities to aid host and transit countries in providing protection and basic services—such as shelter, health, and education. These measures are essential for the stability of nations, especially in light of the worsening global and regional refugee situations, which undermine development efforts despite numerous plans at global, regional, and national levels.
